Director of Career Counseling

The Education Fund is a non-profit partnership between SEIU UHW-West and Healthcare Industry Employers; on a mission to accelerate the careers of 90,000 SEIU eligible healthcare workers through innovative education and training solutions. We have a bold strategy to transform the Ed Fund and need an experienced leader to play a crucial role in the continuing development, implementation, and evaluation of our Career Counseling programs.

Reporting directly to our Chief of Staff (in Oakland or Los Angeles), you will lead a team who will scale our career advice function in order to ensure that programs are high quality and aligned to our mission.

You are an integral part of the leadership team, so you'll need to be a collaborative expert on Counseling & Career Development topics. We need you to think big, be outcome focused and comfortable with change. This is hands-on work that requires you to be both strategic and detailed.

You will manage and direct Counseling Services. You will coordinate assigned activities with other divisions and departments, and provide expertise and advice to Program Managers.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in employer development activities including employer visitations, outreach, labor management partnership, and the development of job and apprenticeship leads.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to develop world-class counseling support to meet the needs of the industry now and in the future.
  • Ability to evaluate and anticipate healthcare needs and trends and to align program development and new resource opportunities to meet the Fund's mission and strategy.
  • Strong leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to provide vision and strategic direction, especially within a fast-paced, results-oriented, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Work closely with other staff members in the planning and coordination of career outreach and programs such as, career programs, and employer panels.
  • Ability to remotely supervise staff working in Regions outside of California (Denver, Portland, and Las Vegas) on both Career Counseling and general Education Fund programing.
  • Track emerging career counseling and career development trends, specifically in career pathways.
  • Strong knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling process, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques. Job search techniques to include industries.
  • Thorough knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice; workshop and program design.
  • Knowledge of counseling theory.
  • Major contributor to Senior Leadership team meetings to execute our mission and strategy.
  • Experienced in developing and managing annual budgets.

Qualifications and Capabilities

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience in career development counselor education, counseling psychology, career advising, career coaching, career counseling and career development.
  • Background in diversity-centered workforce development, higher-education, or career coaching highly desirable.
  • Ability to provide and analyze statistical data for periodic and end of year reporting.
  • Ability to be sensitive to issues of diversity and ability to work in a diverse environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and proven ability to establish strong relationships inside and outside the Fund.
  • Experience in a union, labor management or healthcare industry environment preferred.
