Community Organizer

Based in Massapequa, NY

The Long Island Progressive Coalition (LIPC) seeks a full-time organizer (working out of our Massapequa office) to implement local and statewide campaigns and projects that promote social, racial and economic justice for all people. Must have a car, driver’s license, and be available days, and some evenings and weekends. Salary commensurate with experience.

Among the important task the organizer will perform:

  • Conceptualize and implement a variety of campaigns and projects
  • Recruit, coordinate, and supervise volunteers
  • Attract and recruit prospective dues paying members
  • Implement workshops and other training opportunities to develop leadership skills
  • Cultivate relationships with current and potential coalition partners and leaders
  • Act as the organizations’ spokesperson when needed
  • Coordinate press conferences, rallies, town hall meetings, and lobby visits
  • Help maintain a growing database of members, prospects, coalition partners, and media contacts

The candidate should have the following experience, skills, and attributes:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience recruiting and organizing people to work on campaigns and/or projects preferred (volunteer work is included in this requirement)
  • Proven ability to work independently
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work under tight deadlines
  • Proven ability to work with people of varying ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good public speaking skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Social media knowledge and skills
  • Willingness to go door to door
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Spanish-speaking ability a strong advantage
