SEIU Local 121RN, a powerful voice for Registered Nurses and Professionals in Southern California, is looking for a Union Representative. Local 121RN represents more than 8,500 Nurses and Professionals working in hospitals in Los Angeles, Ventura and Riverside counties. Local 121RN is leading the fight to win strong contracts, enact strong workplace protections and strengthen staffing standards for Registered Nurses and Professionals.

Job Description: The Communications Director is responsible for strategic planning of all communications needs in support of internal and external field organizing campaigns, contract campaigns and political and community campaigns. The Communications Director creates the work of the department by working closely with the Local’s staff leadership team, other staff and member leaders to determine communications priorities, to determine strategic alliances with media, public relations campaigns, community involvement and to place Local 121RN at the forefront of news outlets in a way that showcases the work of our membership at work and in the political arena. The Communications Director reports to the Chief of Staff or designee.

In addition to directing, supervising and developing internal communications staff, other responsibilities include the creation, directing or assigning of any of the following:

  • Communications training for staff and members.
  • Development of the overall Communications strategy for the Local in conjunction with the leadership team and responsible for implementation of such program.
  • Development of Communications strategies by working with national and local reporters and bloggers to promote 121RN members, issues and priorities.
  • Electronic, print and other materials to support the Local’s work, including direct mail pieces, earned media materials, campaign ads, materials for TV spots, etc.
  • Press releases, statements, talking points, letters to the editor and opinion editorials for 121RN officers and members.
  • Writes, edits and designs member and public leaflets, newsletters, etc.
  • Media outreach regarding 121RN actions and events.
  • Talking points and prepping members on our public message.
  • Photograph and record 121RN’s actions and events.
  • Outreach to members through mass emails and text messaging.
  • Creation and posting of updates (work site victories, member victories, legislative efforts and victories, etc.) to 121RN’s website, Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets.
  • Planning and coordination of public relations activities and events that promote the work of 121RN.

Participates in negotiations or campaign strategy meetings when necessary to plan communications strategies.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in labor relations, communications, political science or liberal arts preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in online organizing, digital media buying, strategic communications and issue, political or labor organizing; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience with the labor movement or other advocacy group preferred.

Skills/Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of and experience in organizing, political and/or bargaining campaigns.
  • Demonstrated experience in performing pro-active media outreach, maintaining strong working relationships with journalists and reporters, and generating positive media coverage.
  • Knowledge of graphic design software, video production and printing techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience with electronic, and social media forms of communications.
  • Ability to coordinate multidimensional campaign communications strategies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to develop a campaign message and enforce message discipline in fast-paced campaigns.
  • Ability to work long and extended hours, including weekends and some holidays.
  • Occasional travel will be required.

Fluency in a second language is desirable.

A valid driver’s license and automobile insurance are required.
