The Houston Organizing Project is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and works to support the mission of goals of the Houston Federation of Teachers (HFT) in order to secure a stronger voice for educators and stand for strong public schools. The Houston Federation of Teachers is the leading, strongest union voice for Houston educators, education professionals and classroom assistants and aides.

The Houston Organizing Project seeks a Community/Digital Organizer to join our campaign to strengthen the voice of Houston educators and support personnel.

The Community/Digital Organizer is responsible for the day to day operations of HFT’s social media and digital communications and building community relationships/partnerships to support HFT’s mission for strong public schools in Houston.

Digital Organizer Role

  • Respond to breaking news and campaign developments with tweets, Facebook posts and other content to amplify HFT’s messages online and grow HFT’s membership.
  • Work with HFT and project staff to develop and implement multiplatform social media campaigns that support specific campaign goals. These include public education, mobilizing grassroots activists and expanding HFT’s visibility.
  • Monitor trends in social media for new effective platforms and practices.
  • Track analytics for social media and achieve specific goals to improve performance.
  • Train members and staff on the basics of Twitter, Facebook and other widely used social media platforms. Build a team of members to drive social media campaigns.
  • Coordinate and maintain data sharing between social media platforms, LAN/VAN and other organizing tools
  • Other duties as assigned.

Community Organizer Role

  • Identify and develop relationships with potential allies among labor, religious, ethnic, immigrant, advocacy, disability, environmental, senior, neighborhood and other appropriate community organizations and leaders to build Houston Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools (AROS) coalition.
  • Develop relationships with potential allies, educate them on HFT/AFT campaigns and objectives and organize them to support join the Houston AROS coalition.
  • Build and maintain a database of community organizations in the area.
  • Organize community forums, petitions and press conferences in support of strategic campaigns.
  • Attend meetings of allied community organizations when appropriate to maintain effective relationships and build support for union campaigns.
  • Participate in HFT and project activities including political campaigns, organizing blitzes and other Local-wide efforts as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications for Applicants:

  • Knowledge, experience and background indicating capabilities in digital organizing and database tools (LAN/VAN, Action Network, Hustle, Spitfire Auto-Dialer, Twitter, Facebook)
  • Ability to establish, maintain rapport and work in mutually beneficial coalitions with widely varied ethnic, social and philosophical groups
  • Demonstrated commitment to empower workers through the labor movement political and community organizing.
  • Strong ability to work independently and meet multiple deadlines in a consistent manner.
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Willingness to take direction and work in a team.
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • A commitment to social justice and the mission of the HFT/AFT.
  • Valid drivers license and insured car.
  • Established relationships with community and political organizations in the Houston metro area preferred.

This job requires long and irregular hours, weekend work, and travel out of state.
