The Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE) union represents a membership of over 14,000 public employees in all segments of state of Minnesota services, and they are significant contributors to the high quality of life that is enjoyed by all Minnesotans. From a clean water supply to auditing to healthcare, MAPE works to provide the needed services.

The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring that the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees represents effectively and professionally the collective interests of its membership. The role is ultimately charged with ensuring that the delivery of MAPE services is carried out to the maximum benefit of MAPE members. Taking direction from the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is held accountable for the following responsibilities, articulated in no particular order of importance:

  • Oversee the Association’s operations and budget
  • Supervise staff in conjunction with the business manager
  • Represent the collective interests of members
  • Facilitate communication within the Association
  • Advance MAPE’s political influence and public profile.

To be considered for this position, ideal candidates must possess a combination of education and experience demonstrating knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to:

  • Hold a 4 year degree in any field
  • A minimum of 15 years of work experience in which s/he has effectively led, managed, and administered the operations of a complex organization.
  • Possess knowledge of labor relations, labor law, state government operations, finance and budget management, and the legislative process.
  • Some knowledge of trade union organizations, contract negotiation, and lobbying is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrate superior managerial skills, including the ability to organize, administer, and manage a professional organization, maintain office staffing, administer a budget, and compile and use databases.
  • Demonstrate superior inter-personal and communicative skills, including the ability to forge positive working relationships with various stakeholders, to communicate clearly in written, oral, and electronic forms, and to create a positive image of the Association.
  • Demonstrate superior problem-solving skills, including the ability to independently and collaboratively derive solutions to the challenges of employee representation.
  • Be able to prioritize in a multi-tasking environment.
