Senior Organizer

Summary:

The Senior Organizer will be an essential part of the successful operations of our local.  The individual will be primarily responsible for overseeing member services, which includes managing the grievance process, organizing work site meetings, coordinating contract campaigns, actions, and building worker power.  As a social justice organization dedicated to improving the lives of working people, the work may require long and irregular hours.     

SEIU LOCAL 2007 Overview:

Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 2007 is an affiliate in the Property Services Division of the Service Employees International Union which represents 2 million members in the United States.

SEIU Local 2007 represents more than 1,200 service and technical workers at Stanford and Santa Clara Universities. Our members perform service, maintenance and technical work for the universities, including food services, residential maintenance, craft and trade work, and technical support for research programs. SEIU Local 2007 supports our members and leaders through programs that provide professional development and direction, union education and advocacy, and work place representation

SEIU Local 2007 is governed by a member-elected Executive Council that meets several times a month. This Council is charged with setting forth a leadership agenda that works to strengthen the local’s effectiveness in solving work place issues with our members, while enhancing our public profile. The Council is responsible for maintaining the fiduciary integrity of our financial systems. We work to generate the respect of service and technical service workers in our community, as well as the public and policy makers, by being a powerful advocate for the working conditions of our members and by enhancing the delivery of quality services.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of the Executive Director, oversee member services.
  • Coordinate the work of member leaders and/or other staff in a lead capacity.
  • Possess the ability to operate independently with minimal supervision.
  • Manage grievance process, including investigation, writing, and presenting on behalf of the Union.
  • Plan and execute campaign or grievance actions/mobilization activities (i.e. rallies, protests, petitions, etc.)  
  • Coordinate negotiations and contract campaigns as directed.
  • Develop and execute worker trainings, and Union events as directed.
  • Create weekly and/or monthly work plans.
  • Meet with members on a regular basis.
  • Guide member committee meetings.
  • Provide support for the implementation of Steward Council Meetings.
  • Handle special projects or assignments as needed for organizational operations.  

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS and at least 3 years Union or social justice organization experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience managing multiple projects
  • Ability to think strategically and respond to rapidly changing situations
  • Understanding of the labor movement and the values it promotes
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications, including Excel, Word, and Power Point
  • Ability to lift 25lbs
  • Must be able to sit at a computer station and attend on/off campus meetings
  • Driver’s License and required Insurance
  • Successfully pass criminal background check

Preferred:

  • Ability to communicate and translate documents in Spanish.
  • 5 years’ experience working for a Union or similar social justice organization.
  • Willing to build collaborative relationships with diverse groups.
