UniServ Director

The West Central Colorado UniServ Unit is seeking qualified candidates for the position of UniServ Director.

West Central Colorado UniServ Description: West Central Colorado UniServ Unit is a local-controlled UniServ Unit encompassing ten (10) active associations, which include educational support professionals and higher education locals. There is opportunity for organizing additional locals. Current membership is approximately 1,500.

The Unit is in scenic west central Colorado, near ski areas, national parks and forests, and varied outdoor venues. The office is in Grand Junction and is staffed with one UniServ Director and one Office Manager/Organizer. Both are hired by and responsible to the UniServ Council.

The UniServ Director position involves considerable travel on the western slope of Colorado including Grand Junction, Rangely, Meeker, Rifle, Delta and Montrose. Expectations include occasional evening and weekend work.

Critical Attributes, Behaviors, and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, minimum.
  • Knowledge of education, education reforms, and political issues affecting public schools, preferably in Colorado.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Good listening skills are a must.
  • Open to new ideas and the ability to function effectively in an environment of change.
  • Knowledge in the areas of labor relations, grievance processing, and member advocacy.
  • Proven experience in adult learning and leader/member training with an acute ability to recruit and motivate volunteers.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work well with people from varied backgrounds and positions in a conservative based, rural environment (i.e., members, superintendents and school boards).
  • Comfortable with the use and implementation of technology to engage members.
  • Experience as an effective organizer in membership, collective bargaining, traditional and interest-based facilitation, and political issues.
  • Be able to understand a budget and adhere to fiscal policies.
  • Experience in community relations and community coalition building.
  • Pre K-12 public education experience preferred

  • Dependable and committed advocate for all association members and their needs as public education employees.
  • Excellent volunteer and membership recruitment skills for increasing teacher, ESP, higher education, and student involvement.
  • Experience in contract negotiations and member advocacy in both bargaining and non-bargaining locals.
  • Ability to anticipate organizing opportunities and future organizational trends
  • Committed and able to drive long distances
  • Proven people skills, a sense of humor, and a “can do” attitude.
  • Good relations with NEA/CEA.
  • Association experience preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:
Starting salary range $60,000 to $70,000 based upon qualifications and experience. A range of fringe benefits to include: dental insurance, vision care, life and disability coverage, paid sick leave, and paid vacation.
