Massachusetts Jobs with Justice (JWJ) is a coalition of labor, religious, student and community activists and organizations committed to protecting workers’ rights and fighting for economic, social and racial justice. Jobs With Justice addresses the root causes of poverty while working for an economic base that benefits the entire community. We believe that the fate of labor unions and the communities in which their members live are tightly bound together. We work in partnership with central labor councils, local unions, civil rights organizations, students, community, and faith-based organizations in mobilizing direct actions for social and economic justice for all people, including the right to organize a union, rebuilding the social safety net, living wages, health care, and equal treatment for all. The Position: Executive Director

The Executive Director (ED) will work closely with the Statewide Executive Board and Regional Councils across Massachusetts to develop and lead the capacity building and campaign priorities of Massachusetts Jobs with Justice. The Executive Director leads a staff team that supports seven permanent staff and campaign teams that grow at peak times for key organizing work. This position is based in Boston but will require regular travel around the state.

Responsibilities:

  • Campaigns: The heart of Jobs With Justice is taking action as part of campaigns for social and economic justice. The Executive Director will coordinate campaign development, mobilization and evaluation in collaboration with the rest of the staff, Statewide Executive Committee, regional councils. This will include legislative campaigns, ballot initiatives and support for workplace-based organizing and collective bargaining fights.
  • Staff Management: The Executive Director is responsible for the day to day supervision of the rest of the staff. The ED leads bargaining with the collective bargaining agent for the Massachusetts Jobs With Justice staff. The ED works under the direction of the Statewide Executive Committee and reports to its officers.
  • This board hires and evaluates the Executive Director.
  • Fundraising and Financial Administration: The Executive Director has primary responsibility for ensuring the financial stability and sound fiscal management of the organization. They develop an annual fundraising plan, with fundraising team solicit funding for special projects and key campaigns in partnership with member organizations and foundations. Like all staff and leaders, they are also responsible for growing the base of individual donors. They work closely with the EC Treasurer to propose the organization’s annual budget to the Statewide Executive Committee and ensure accurate monthly reporting. They work with a professional accounting firm to ensure an annual financial review and all appropriate tax filings and ethics reporting are properly completed.
  • Organizational Development and Support: The Executive Director is responsible, with other staff, for the recruitment to, and the development and support of, the statewide structures of Massachusetts Jobs with Justice. The Executive Director does not primarily staff, but oversees and participates in as needed meetings of the Regional Councils to ensure the alignment of the organization statewide along overseeing the building of volunteer driven Solidarity Committees.
  • Communications: Working with communications team the ED will oversee the communications strategy of the organization as well as represent the organization in the press and on social media platforms.
  • Coalitions/alliances: A key responsibility of the Executive Director is developing and representing JWJ within key alliances both in Massachusetts and nationally and/or supporting other staff assigned to these roles.

Qualifications:

  • Solid commitment to the principles of social, economic and racial justice.
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts political and organizing climate preferred.
  • Minimum of four years grassroots organizing experience and minimum two years managing organizers preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and to work independently toward agreed upon goals.
  • A strong ability to motivate people, develop staff and leaders and delegate responsibility.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with a diverse group of organizations and individuals.
  • An understanding of the labor movement, community organizing, faith-based groups and other social movements.
  • Demonstrated ability to raise funds.
  • Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including database management, word processing.
  • Bookkeeping and financial management skills.
  • Own vehicle available for work (mileage is reimbursed).

Also Desired: Knowledge of and/or participation in Jobs With Justice in Massachusetts or elsewhere in the country.

Salary: $57,000-$65,000 depending on experience
