Reports to: Contra Costa Civic Engagement Table Advisory Board

Time: 6-month Temporary Contract Position, approximately 20-24 hours/week, beginning Aug 1, 2017

The Contra Costa Civic Engagement Table is seeking a skilled and experienced Strategic Coordinator over the next 6 months to help engage and guide 9 partner organizations in the “launch phase” of a Civic Engagement Table for Contra Costa County. This table seeks to build the power needed in Contra Costa to shift the local, regional and statewide landscape and to lift up low wage workers, tenants and immigrants, a group of strategic economic, environmental and racial justice organizations have come together to develop a county-wide civic engagement table. The goals of the table are to:

  1. Build power in Contra Costa County towards realizing a vision of economic, environmental and racial justice shared and advanced by local organizations across the county.
  2. Add capacity to organizations doing the work in the county to build the organizing infrastructure in Central and East County
  3. Create political alignment as articulated by a shared vision and platform among partners.
  4. Coordinate issue advocacy, field work, movement building, and politics across Contra Costa’s varied communities

The primary responsibility of the Coordinator will be to lead the partners through a 12-14 week planning process as we pursue organizational alignment, develop a platform and a field /campaign strategy for 2018.  The key roles of the Strategic Coordinator would be to a) lead the partner organizations through a planning retreat process and the follow-up, b) facilitate bi-weekly meetings, c) help hold each partner and the collective table accountable to goals and deadlines, d) help to complete administrative tasks in support of fundraising goals in this “launch phase”, and e) support the Table hire the full-time CCCE Table Coordinator or Director by October.

3-month planning process proposed outcomes:

  • Principles and policy platform, based on a shared understanding of each other’s work and understanding of how racial and economic injustice plays out in the county.
  • Shared analysis of existing capacity in the county and where the gaps are, and how this Table will relate to the other organizations and coalitions.
  • Set in motion research to understand the electoral landscape and key races, including an analysis of Central and East County voters’ civic participation; assessment of Board of Supervisors, Sheriff and District Attorney, potentially in collaboration with ACLU.
  • Proposed Structure for the collaborative and plan for action in the next year, including how we work together and make decisions, collective budget (C3/C4) and fundraising protocols, table staffing, communication infrastructure.
  • Exploration of capacity-adding and coordination the table can provider including possibly shared office space in East and Central County or C3/C4 trainings for all orgs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborative Leadership: Support the development of overall strategic leadership, vision and direction for the CCCE table through inclusive decision-making. Build unity and positive relationships through work and process among the advisory board members, table partner organizations and other strategic allies.
  2. Campaign Development: Work with the partners to outline the phases and benchmarks for a field campaign for voter engagement in 2018, that links and supports existing priority campaigns within the Table.
  3. Fund Development: In partnership with partner organizations, help solidify pledged funding and identify more funds for program and table operations from sources, including local/national foundations and local individual donors. Support coordination and communication with funders and grant writers for both c3 and c4 work.
  4. Organizational Development, Operations and Management: Oversee and manage the day- to-day operations during this Launch Phase, including staff/contractors supervision, training, and communications strategies. Make key operational decisions to achieve strategic organizational goals in a timely manner. Help build a culture of organizational excellence that is transparent and respectful, with open lines of communication.


  • Experience  leading coalition work/civic engagement and/or campaign work
  • Strong organizational development and facilitation skills
  • Politically and visionary aligned with coalition’s mission
  • Experience fundraising and managing budgets
  • Preferred: Knowledge of  Contra Costa’s political landscape
  • Minimum education required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent level of experience.

Compensation: This position is a short term, contract position that will be administered through CCCET’s fiscal sponsor, The Tides Foundation. The CCCET partners and the selected candidate will jointly arrive at a scope of work and contract amount.
