Colorado Jobs with Justice

Based in Denver, CO

About the Organization
Colorado Jobs With Justice is a coalition of community, labor, student and faith groups that come together to build working class power and stand up for workers’ rights. We work in partnership with our member organizations in mobilizing direct actions for social and economic justice for all people, including the right to organize a union, rebuilding the social safety net, living wages, health care, and equal treatment for all. We organize and base our work on a model of solidarity and reciprocity. Colorado Jobs With Justice is an equal opportunity employer. We seek a diverse pool of volunteers and applicants for all opportunities and responsibilities within the organization – in particular with respect to women, people of color, the LGBT community, immigrants, and people of all ages and abilities.

Position Overview:
Colorado Jobs With Justice is seeking to hire the position of “Organizer” who will work with construction industry stakeholders to promote the recruitment and retention of women and people of color into apprenticeship programs and onto job sites. This work is part of a larger, national partnership between Jobs With Justice and allied unions to fight for good, family-sustaining careers, particularly for low income communities and communities of color. This is a temporary, two-year, grant funded position, with the potential for the position to become permanent by the end of two years. The position is based in Denver, Colorado.

Responsibilities:
Base-Building & Mobilization: JWJ puts people directly affected by issues into confrontation with decision-makers to win concrete changes in the lives of working people. The Organizer will work to grow our base by activating the members of our union partners and engaging members of the community, faith institutions, campuses, and youth groups. The Organizer will create and sustain affinity committees of women and people of color tradespeople, housed within Colorado Jobs With Justice. The Organizer will provide technical assistance to apprenticeship programs and other industry stakeholders to improve the outreach, training/placement, and retention of women in apprenticeship.

Campaigns: The Organizer will act as the lead for our construction campaign with support from the Organizer Director. The Organizer will focus on the goal of expanding access to careers for women and people of color by providing strategic campaign support around efforts to win targeted hire language on large construction projects, identifying and conducting outreach to appropriate community and service organizations, and pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs, and engaging workforce development agencies and other potential funding sources for pipeline programs. The Organizer will be responsible for tracking and reporting on outcomes, coordinating and implementing media strategy (including social media), and compiling and disseminating resource and technical assistance materials.

Steering and Mobilization Committee Support: JWJ operates through our leadership-driven Steering and Mobilization Committees. The Steering Committee meets monthly to coordinate on movement strategy and process Solidarity Requests. The Mobilization committee meets as needed to support the work of mobilizing our base. The Organizer will support the Steering and Mobilization Committees as needed for their campaign.

Fundraising, Communications and Data Management: The Organizer will help implement an annual fundraising plan, which is determined by our Board of Directors.

Leadership Development: The Organizer will encourage, foster, and develop the abilities of JWJ members, particularly rank and file members and activists from our campaigns to play leading roles in developing and building the organization. This will include participation in our three-day Leadership Development and Organizing Training.

Workshop Facilitation and Training: The Organizer will help to foster and grow our Popular Education programs through scheduling workshops, leading workshops, and training individuals to facilitate workshops.
