Organizational Description:
The National Domestic Workers Alliance (www.domesticworkers.org) organizes domestic workers in the United States for respect, recognition and labor standards. We work to guarantee labor protections for domestic workers by winning legislation at the state level, pushing for regulatory changes at the national level, through the International Labor Organization at the global level, and elevating domestic workers as key leaders in building a powerful movement for social and global justice. The Alliance formed in 2007 at the US Social Forum and currently represents 48 affiliates in 36 cities and 16 states nationally.

NDWA is seeking a dedicated and passionate Technology Development Manager to provide vision and leadership for developing and implementing technology initiatives and to direct the planning and implementation of NDWA’s IT systems - web-based and cloud-based - in support of our programs and operations. The IT Manager will understand the mission of NDWA and how technology supports and extends that mission by maintaining and develop our external communications and enhancing our internal communications and overall operational efficiency. This is a hands-on position requiring a working knowledge and ability to implement and support hardware, software, and cloud-based systems. The Technology Development Manager is also a key member of the Operations team, which includes Finance, Administration/Operations, Human Resources, and Information Technology. The Operations team works together to provide high quality and timely support to the work of the organization, with a focus on providing training and support to its employees while maintaining excellent relations with external parties (members, vendors, and allies).

Primary responsibilities:

  • Maintains organization's effectiveness and efficiency by defining, delivering, and supporting strategic plans for implementing information technologies;
  • Recommends information technology strategies, policies, and procedures by evaluating organization outcomes, identifying problems, evaluating trends, anticipating requirements, and integrating that knowledge to create and implement systems that work;
  • Provides support for NDWA staff in using our member database, and ongoing customization of the database as needed, including syncing with Mobile Commons and Action Network;
  • Manages NDWA’s cloud-based servers and backup, websites, and computers;
  • Manages updates for websites, including making technical/structural updates, developing new functionality and content;
  • Secures and manages technology contractors as needed;
  • Ensures safe work practices through creating and implementing digital security policies and systems;
  • Identifies opportunities for the appropriate and cost-effective investment of financial resources in IT systems and resources, including staffing, sourcing, purchasing, and in-house development;
  • Plans computer acquisitions, upgrades, installation, and maintenance;
  • Assists the communications team as needed;
  • Trains staff of varying technology skill and experience on current & new technologies;
  • Evaluates and implements systems and processes necessary to support a mobile staff of 40+;
  • Maintains user accounts and permissions on various systems including Google Apps, directory systems, websites, etc.; and
  • Serves as "help desk" for voice/data/technology questions and offers basic desktop support when needed.


  • Minimum 4 years cross-functional IT experience including database management and development, website development and implementation, laptop and remote support, infrastructure, and security;
  • Experience deploying and providing end user support on the following programs and/or platforms: Drupal and WordPress, Action Network, Mobile Commons, Salesforce, QuickBase, Mac products and software, Google Applications for Non-Profits, Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Experience in developing and maintaining websites (Drupal 7 and WordPress);
  • Experience in customizing relational databases (QuickBase experience preferred, but experience with Powerbase/CiviCRM or other cloud database will be considered);
  • Comfortable coding in HTML and CSS, and modifying Drupal and WordPress themes.
  • Experience with php, JavaScript and jQuery preferred, and using them to modify and customize Drupal and WordPress plugins and themes
  • Experience with RESTful APIs preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects, establish workload priorities, and meet deadlines;
  • Strong verbal & written communication skills, including the ability to train people on new technologies, including remote training via phone and/or screenshare;
  • Self-motivated and a proven ability to work independently and in partnership with a highly motivated Administrative Team in a fast-paced, demanding, and rapidly growing organization;
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups and populations, including some of whom have a low technology skill level;
  • Agreement and alignment with NDWA’s vision and values;
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus; and
  • Understanding of issues facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, and other communities of color.
