SEIU 32BJ is one of the nation’s largest and most dynamic labor unions. We represent 163,000 property service members in eleven states and Washington DC. Our members include janitors, custodians, security officers, trades and food service workers. District 615 is committed to building a strong union based on membership participation and leadership development. We represent workers at many area colleges and universities in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island including Harvard, MIT, Boston College, Boston University, U-Mass Boston, Northeastern, and Brandeis. We are looking for an organizer to work as union representative with the Higher Education Division of 32BJ, District 615 in Boston, MA.

The Organizer will work with SEIU members in colleges and universities to build a stronger union, with assignments including the following:

  • Identify the issues of groups of workers and individual workers at work sites;
  • Effectively communicate in house calls, site visits, and group meetings;
  • Identify and recruit worksite Leaders, build effective member committees;
  • Organize with workers to take action on problems at work and in the community;
  • Mobilize Union members for actions;
  • Make and execute weekly work plans to support the work of the Union;
  • Coordinate rallies, strikes and other actions;
  • Bargain contracts

Requirements:

  • Fluency in Spanish and English, both oral and written;
  • Inspire workers and members in the Union’s jurisdiction;
  • Travel between various sites in short time periods, ascend flights of stairs, and participate in marches and demonstrations of at least 3 hours in duration;
  • Demonstrate a commitment working for justice;
  • Work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Communicate effectively (listening, speaking, and writing);.
  • Computer skills including word processing, database and e-mail applications;
  • Long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays;
  • Valid drivers’ license and car with insurance

We are looking for candidates with previous experience in the labor movement and/or interest in union workers’ rights; negotiating experience is preferred. Salary commensurate with experience. An excellent benefits package includes employer-paid medical and dental coverage for employees and their qualified dependents, pension and 401k plans. This is a full-time position based in the Boston office. Some overnight travel to other East Coast locations is necessary.
