SEIU Local 121RN, a powerful voice for Registered Nurses and Professionals in Southern California, is looking for a Union Representative. Local 121RN represents more than 8,500 Nurses and Professionals working in hospitals in Los Angeles, Ventura and Riverside counties. Local 121RN is leading the fight to win strong contracts, enact strong workplace protections and strengthen staffing standards for Registered Nurses and Professionals.

Job Description: The Union Representative is responsible for development of worksite leaders, enforcement of the collective bargaining agreement, responding to questions about the contract and developing internal structures that support field organizing campaigns, contract campaigns and political and community campaigns. The Union Representative also files grievances and does preparation for arbitration to enforce our members’ contractual rights. In addition, this position prepares for negotiations through working with the membership, disseminating bargaining surveys and working with the bargaining committee and Chief Negotiator. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, as well as the ability to work independently and in a team environment.


  • Development of current leaders (Stewards, Bargaining Team members, Contract Action Team members), as well as identifying, recruiting and developing new leaders
  • Engaging and mobilizing our members into action through various internal and external processes, including the collective bargaining process, the legislative process, etc (i.e. contract campaigns, lobbying)
  • Developing and implementing internal organizing campaigns around worksite issues
  • Filing of grievances, and assisting stewards file grievances, provide stewards guidance and prepare members throughout the grievance and arbitration process
  • Facilitating membership meetings and coordinating membership events
  • Effectively and timely communications with our members, executive board, staff and leadership.
  • Maintaining Union membership, visibility and activity
  • Participating in community, political and other Union events


  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Union/Field Representative or combination of experience as a Union/Field Representative and Organizer, preferably as a RN (or in the healthcare sector if not a RN)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to listen actively and frame issues for and with members
  • Ability to assess information and evidence and deal with conflicting/changing priorities
  • Ability to think strategically and exercise a high level of judgment
  • Ability and willingness to hold management representatives accountable through contract enforcement and membership participation
  • Willingness to often work long and irregular hours, including evenings, weekends and occasional holidays, and to participate in Union-wide events and activities
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook and membership databases
  • Commitment to social justice and to carrying out the vision and program of the organization.
  • Basic knowledge of Title 22, BRN, Cal-OSHA standards and other statutes related to nursing and the healthcare sector preferred
  • Occasional travel may be required
  • All other duties as assigned

You must be proactive, have the ability to take direction and work well independently and in a team environment. A valid driver’s license and automobile insurance are required.
