Workers’ Compensation Organizer
Part Time (24 hours)

PURPOSE OF CLASS:
To implement the workers’ compensation program of the Union. To ensure that injured workers’ rights are protected.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Supervised by the President of the Union or Designee.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
May lead other organizers in regards to worker’s compensation.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Represents injured workers; fulfills all roles of legal representative: examines and assesses documentation of injury, prepares case, negotiates with compensation insurance company and other officials, represents workers at hearings, educates workers during this process. Develops and implements a program of education for organizers, delegates, and members at large on worker’s compensation procedures and processes, including what benefits are, steps to take when injury occurs, and how to deal with the administration of worker’s compensation. Designs written manuals and educational materials for members.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Communication; ability to listen actively - frame issues; dedication to workers’ rights and progress; excellent interpersonal skills; lead and motivate workers; considerable knowledge of labor and workers compensation issues; learn to interpret relevant special body of knowledge (contract, workers compensation, etc.); ability to assess information and evidence; deal with conflicting/changing priorities; flexibility; self-directedness, ability to think strategically; skill in meeting many and varying deadlines (from returning phone calls to producing results on reports); negotiate formally and informally; balance assertiveness, aggressiveness, stamina, dedication, and supportiveness (certain assignments require specialized bodies of knowledge).

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Knowledge of workers’ compensation issues, benefits, procedures, and rights and responsibilities of injured workers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Shifting priorities and deadlines. Decisions made by organizers can have profound effects on workers’ lives, which is a source of stress.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Current valid driver’s license.
