Field Organizer

Based in Bakersfield, CA


The Labor Council is seeking a Field Organizer for an exciting and innovative project. The Labor Council encompasses the counties of Kern, Inyo and Mono counties. We seek an experienced, flexible, highly talented campaign organizer who can motivate union leaders, staff and volunteers, understands and respects the evolving role and scope of unions, and can develop programs and broaden involvement that will increase and solidify labor’s political, legislative, and organizing strengths.

The Field Organizer will work with Local Unions, Community Partners, California Labor Federation and AFL-CIO and their programs to build and maximize growth of the Labor Movement through recruitment, training, strategic planning, internal capacity building, and affiliation with unions in these areas.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Work with Labor Council and Union leadership to develop a plan to build Local Union involvement and affiliation.
  • Help build the Council, recruit new affiliates and develop other resources and fundraising for the council
  • Work with Local Unions to recruit, develop and train activists/member leaders
  • Represent the Labor Council at City Council, Board of Supervisors and other key meetings
  • Develop campaigns and union involvement to shape policies and public decisions that impact affiliated unions (ex: Local Hire, Fighting Privatization, etc.)
  • Work with Council Leaders and Union leaders to develop and implement programs, such as:
    • Local campaigns for statewide/local candidates, ballot initiatives and GOTV;
    • Local Union Mobilization/Volunteer Recruitment Plans for Campaigns;
    • Affiliation/Increased Affiliation of Local Unions;
    • Worksite education trainings and programs;
    • Organizing campaigns;
    • Updating Data Base and technology improvements for member to member program
    • Developing local legislative action for in-district lobbying of state legislators;
  • Developing programs with accountability and transparency for all involved
  • Develop a communications plan including relationships with local media and use of social and digital media to expand the CLC’s reach and promote Labor’s work

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • Grassroots member-to-member political, organizing and mobilizing experience
  • Knowledge of and commitment to Labor movement
  • Experience with training, planning, campaign development and implementation
  • Good presentation skills
  • Involvement in coalition building
  • Ability to instill confidence, inspire team involvement, and work as a member of a team
  • Must be computer literate and proficient in designing and creating multi-media presentations
  • Strong multi-tasking capability, have initiative and drive, and be able to work independently
  • Willingness and capacity to work extended hours and weekends
  • Have at least 3-5+ years as a lead in a union, campaign or Labor Council (e.g. lead field representative, organizer or internal projects)
