Statewide Peer Assistance Program for Nurses – (SPAN)

The New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) is a union of nearly 40,000 frontline nurses standing together for strength at work, integrity of nursing practice, safe staffing, and healthcare for all. We are New York's largest union and professional association for registered nurses.

NYSNA is seeking a Director for its Statewide Peer Assistance for Nurses (SPAN). SPAN is a state funded program operated by NYSNA to provide outreach, support and advocacy to NYS licensed nurses affected by substance use disorders, to provide education to nurses and health care providers about the benefits of early identification and intervention, to refer nurses to assistance and treatment options, to promote working environments that allow healthy capable nurses to provide safe patient care and to provide assistance in protecting quality of nursing care and preserving nurses licensure and employment.

The Director of the Statewide Peer Assistance Program (SPAN) reports to the Executive Director of NYSNA. The Director of SPAN is responsible for the supervision of program staff and volunteers and overseeing operations of the program throughout the state of New York.

Responsible for the direction, planning, coordination and evaluation of the Statewide Peer Assistance for Nurses Program, including but not limited to:

  • Collaborate with the Professional Assistance Program (PAP) and provide PAP with progress reports on individuals who are enrolled in both SPAN and PAP.
  • Supervise consultations to individuals and groups regarding addiction and related mental health problems and supervise the peer assistance for nurses.
  • Develop and present educational outreach and training materials and programs aimed at prevention, early identification, and intervention to address substance use disorders and related mental health problems.
  • Attend facilitator meetings throughout New York State.
  • Prepare annual budget proposal to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and secure necessary state approval and funding to operate the SPAN program.
  • Provide clinical supervision for SPAN regional coordinators.
  • Ensure that properly trained facilitators are available to operate peer support groups throughout the state.
  • Oversee and manage the operation of a toll free 24-hour-per-day, 7-day-per-week telephone information hotline for nurses to receive referrals assistance and information.
  • Conduct periodic reviews and analyses of nurses’ needs and the scope and effectiveness of the program.
  • Prepare and submit grant applications and fundraising proposals to support the identified mission, purposes, and interests of the Program and the nurses that it serves.
  • Performs such other related assigned duties and activities in support of the Program as assigned by the Executive Director of NYSNA.

RN licensure: Prior experience in substance abuse, prevention, intervention, peer assistance and/or mental health programs. Masters’ degree preferred. Experience in presentations, training and education in substance use disorders helpful. CARN certification a plus.
