This position is responsible for designing print collateral, converting print designs into HTML and CSS, coordinating with development partner, and supporting end-users of the web-based online toolkit. Position will also support other AFSCME activities, with responsibilities for designing creative paid online ad campaigns, designing interactive, multi-media content for the AFSCME website, and overseeing the digital asset management system; and providing digital design and development support as needed.

DUTIES:

  • Manages the design for AFSCME’s online toolkit, including but not limited to editing HTML templates and associated forms in coordination with vendors and consultants.
  • Designs and builds design templates used in AFSCME’s toolkit based on feedback and recommendations from staff and affiliates.
  • Leads the study of and recommends technology enhancements to improve the integrity, functionality and usability of AFSCME’s toolkit.
  • Designs and codes all creative assets for online ad campaigns, including banners and landing pages, working closely with Digital Marketing Strategist; stays up to date on specifications for different ad types and platforms and current trends and best practices for effective online ad creative.
  • Designs multi-media interactive web pages, using the online platform Ceros, to illustrate stories and issue explainers based on content written by AFSCME’s editorial team.
  • Manages AFSCME’s digital asset management system (DAM), maintaining consistent tagging and naming conventions and working with vendors and consultants to identify improvements.
  • Provides support and training to staff and affiliates using these tools.
  • Works alongside the graphics unit and supports additional design needs assigned by the Creative Coordinator.
  • Performs other related duties to support department objectives.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in work in web development, computer programming, graphic design, communications, journalism, political science or liberal arts.
  • Three to five years of relevant work experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in responsive design and front-end development.
  • Experience with content development, online communications and development related to advocacy-focused campaigns a plus.
  • Thorough knowledge of digital and print design; demonstrated experience in the use of Adobe CS: Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
  • HTML5 coding skills with knowledge of CSS3 and JavaScript.
  • Experience in applying best practices in Information Architecture and User Interface design; and considerable knowledge and skill in applying internet design principles and methods, standard graphics applications, formulating/finalizing web pages, other web content and page wireframe creation.
  • Familiarity in the use of content management systems including content entry, editing, workflow and publishing.
  • Proven ability to work across multiple operating system platforms, including mobile; and online ad channels, including GDN, Facebook, etc.
  • Ability to work extended hours needed.
  • Ability to travel for AFSCME business, including political and organizing campaigns, required.
