The American Federation of Teachers is a 1.6 member union of educators and professionals that champions fairness; democracy; economic opportunity; and high-quality education, healthcare and public services for our students, their families and our communities.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
This is a full-time position working on an organizing campaign located in DeKalb, IL. Organizers are responsible for a variety of aspects of a campaign including building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists. This project is a joint venture with the American Federation of Teachers. This job requires long and irregular hours, with some additional weekend work.




QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Willing to work long and irregular hours
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Dedicated to social and economic justice, and quality education
  • In possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license
  • Must have demonstrated leadership abilities and ability to work with a diverse population
  • Experienced in community, student, labor, social justice or environmental activism is a plus for organizer position
  • Experience in higher education is a plus
  • Union organizing experience preferred
  • Must be self-directed

Applicants must be flexible with regards to geography/be willing to relocate.



SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organize and mobilize workers
  • Attend weekly meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and plan activities
  • One-on-one visits, site visits, meetings, and other interaction with potential members
  • Identify and develop new leaders and activists
  • Organize and facilitate meetings
  • Create communication pieces including flyers, emails and social media
  • Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a daily basis
  • Take direction on daily and weekly activities to grow AFT membership and accomplish goals
