The Western States Regional Joint Board of Workers United-SEIU is a growing, progressive union of 8,000 workers at industrial laundries, warehouses, and other jobs in California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Job Title: Internal Organizer

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Internal organizers are responsible for recruiting and developing strong leaders and building an organized, militant membership capable of fighting for justice and winning power in their workplaces, industries, and communities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Recruit, train, and develop members as shop stewards and activists.
  • Build member committees capable of resolving workplace problems and mobilizing co-workers to action.
  • Meet and communicate with members by conducting workplace visits and house calls.
  • Investigate and resolve grievances while training members to do the same.
  • Create and carry out internal organizing plans for multiple workplaces, with guidance from the California District Manager.
  • Promptly return phone calls from members.
  • Maintain updated membership information in computer database.
  • Assist with external organizing campaigns as needed.
  • Driving, travel, and irregular/extended hours.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Union Organizer (Internal or External); ideally 5 years or more as a Union Organizer with experience in both Internal and External organizing, including making house calls, building member committees, and handling grievances.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire working people to action.
  • Basic knowledge of labor law and union organizing principles.
  • Comfortable using computer to update membership databases, create leaflets, correspond with e-mail, and scanning documents.
  • Fluent in both Spanish and English, spoken and written. Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and car required.
