Hiring Full Time Executive Director

The Oregon State Conference of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP-Oregon) is looking for an Executive Director. Four years ago, faculty at the University of Oregon, Portland State and Oregon State University came together to revive the state organization of the AAUP. Since that time, the state conference has established itself as a voice for faculty in Oregon and an important partner with other higher education unions and student groups, legislatively and on campuses. The Executive Director plays a key role in the communication and coordination of faculty activity in Oregon.

The Executive Director’s work involves:

  • Supervising, coaching and evaluating the small staff.
  • Planning strategically for both short-term and long-term goals.
  • Working with the Treasurer and budget committee to prepare the annual budget and maintain financial records.
  • Preparing financial records for, and overseeing, the annual independent audit.
  • Coordinating the work of the organization including organizing, training, and leadership development.
  • Building the legislative program by working with the contract lobbyist and legislative committee to maintain relationships with legislators on higher education issues.
  • Working with our partners at AFT and national AAUP staff on joint organizing projects.
  • Supporting the development of AAUP Advocacy Chapters (non-collective bargaining) at colleges and universities across the state.
  • Staying in regular contact with and providing support to the affiliated local collective bargaining chapters of AAUP
  • Speaking for the organization within the parameters of Association policy.
  • Managing communications and publications.
  • Promoting the purposes of AAUP-Oregon as stated in its governing documents and policies.
  • Leading implementation of projects and priorities as set by the AAUP-Oregon Executive Committee.

Successful candidates will have:

  • A demonstrated commitment to building social justice unionism.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to develop budgets and manage fiscal operations.
  • Experience in relational organizing and use of one to one relational meetings and structures for one to one organizing.
  • Strong coaching, training and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of current issues in higher education and faculty unionism.
  • Experience managing a legislative program.
  • Demonstrated expertise in verbal and written communications.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required.
  • Strong self-motivation, with demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative.
  • Two years’ experience managing a labor organization or equivalent organization is required.
  • Grant-writing experience is a plus.
