Director of Operations and Finance

The Action Center on Race and the Economy (ACRE) drives campaigns that seek to win structural change by directly taking on the corporations responsible for pillaging communities of color and working class communities and harming our environment. Through partnerships with organizations involved in local racial, economic, environmental, and educational justice campaigns, we provide strategic campaign coordination and campaign infrastructure with an explicit racial justice analysis.

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Operations and Finance to join our team. This critical role involves overseeing our organization's financial and operational systems, ensuring that ACRE operates efficiently, effectively, and in alignment with our mission and values. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in finance and operations, including Human Resources, a passion for social justice, and a commitment to racial and economic equity.

Location: Remote, Chicago preferable.

This position reports to the Managing Director.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Financial Management: Oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and audits. Develop and implement financial processes and controls that ensure strong financial compliance and support the organization's stability and short and long term financial goals. Manage the work of all finance staff and contractors. Ensure the organization's financial health and compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Operations Management: Develop and implement operational systems and processes that enhance efficiency and support the organization's strategic goals. Manage the relationship with the Boards of Directors and ensure regular communication and engagement of members of the ACRE and ACRE Institutes board members in the organization’s work. Manage the work of all operations staff and contractors.
  • Human Resources Management: Oversee HR functions, including recruitment, retention, and development of a diverse and talented team. Work with managers to support staff development and management practice for the organization. Manage all staff benefits and organizational relationships with benefits vendors and contractors. Manage the day to day relationship with the staff union and act as a member of the management team in all negotiations with the staff union. Manage the work of all HR staff and contractors.
  • Strategic Planning: Participate in strategic planning and ensure that operational, human resource, and financial strategies align with and support the organization’s long-term objectives.
  • Organizational Leadership: Serve as a key member of the senior leadership team, contributing to overall leadership of the organization, development and implementation of organizational strategy and the on-going work of building a powerful, effective, and welcoming organizational culture.
  • Team leadership: Supervise and manage operations, human resources, and finance staff and contractors, including an external accounting firm.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in operations management, human resources management, and/or financial management; preferably in a social justice oriented, nonprofit setting.
  • Strong understanding of 501-C3 and 501- C4 nonprofit compliance, accounting, budgeting, and financial management.
  • Demonstrated experience in operational leadership and process development.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills.
  • Commitment to racial and economic justice and understanding of the issues ACRE addresses.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Collaborative working style and ability to establish strong working relationships with peers, management, and supervisees.
  • Excellent written and oral communication;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage in a deeply relational way with the organization's staff and board members.

Compensation:
Annual salary range: $95k-$110k, commensurate with experience. Generous benefits, including full employer medical, dental, and vision coverage, and 401K. ACRE provides a 10% cost of living adjustment for staff based in the top ten highest cost-of-living cities.
