About the HTA:
Join us in changing peoples' lives! The Hospitality Training Academy (HTA) is a partnership between the UNITE HERE Local 11 labor union and contributing hotel and food service employers in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino Counties and the entire state of Arizona. The HTA is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) institution and labor-management/Taft-Hartley Fund serving and providing hospitality, culinary and food service training to the incumbent workforce and job seekers from low-income, marginalized communities. The HTA is designed to improve Los Angeles' tourism and hospitality industry by increasing the skill level of its workforce and moving workers up the career ladder. The hospitality industry is one of the largest growing sectors in Southern California, with a projected growth rate higher than all other jobs in the region, and the nation, over the next three years. Right now, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our HTA team as our Director of Human Resources and Operations.

As a Director of HR & Operations you will:

  • Implement HR strategies by establishing department accountabilities including talent acquisition, compensation, health and welfare benefits, records management, safety and health, succession planning and employee relations and retention.
  • Guide management and associate actions by researching, developing, writing and updating policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Be accountable for benefit plan selection, design, cost control and administration, including overseeing administration and plan design for our benefit plans.
  • Administer FMLA and company leaves as defined by federal employment laws.
  • Develop/refine compensation and benefit systems
  • Risk management for workers compensation and unemployment compensation.
  • Develop/refine systems and strategies for recruiting, hiring, orientation and training programs.
  • Assist management in the annual review procedure including preparation and administration of the wage and salary program.
  • Comply with federal, state and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements and advising management on needed actions.
  • Contribute to organizational effectiveness by offering information, suggestions and recommendations.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by completing educational opportunities, reviewing professional publications, benchmarking state of the art practices and networking.
  • Execute with operational integrity by anticipating problems, taking preventative measures, and adapting to changes that improve our operations or guest experience.
  • Consistently follow HTA’s policies and procedures.
  • Share our passion for our products by being familiar with our products and services and actively seeking and sharing that information.
  • Support the HTA in meeting performance goals by understanding program objectives and providing human resource counsel and guidance that aligns with performance objectives, organizational culture and provides solutions to employee and operational issues.
  • Work with Director of Finance to properly input payroll.
  • Meet regularly with staff to inform, equip and inspire excellence in the areas of employee relations, training and development, regulatory compliance, performance management and investigative acumen.
  • Ensure organizational compliance with all Employment/Labor laws and regulations, and all HTA policies.
  • Regularly visit all operations and classes to champion culture, celebrate success, assess human resource performance and provide technical assistance.
  • Organize all employee celebrations and holiday gatherings.
  • Train staff on employee handbooks, management skills, and issues new handbooks, when necessary.
  • Work with the management team to locate new office space and coordinates all office and kitchen moves.
  • Liaise to HTA Board of Trustees and its Administrative Committee.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:
Education, Experience and Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR®) certification preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years of progressive Human Resources or Operations experience required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Understanding of HR laws such as EEO/AA, ERISA, ADA, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of HR best practice strategies and policies
  • Ability to develop integrated solutions from inception to post-delivery assessment
  • Understands business and industry factors to shape how strategies are developed, implemented and sustained

Benefits

The HTA provides health, dental and pension benefits to eligible employees.

The pay rate is $135,000 to $160,000
